San Clemente Real Estate: It’s All Systems Go for Plaza San Clemente

In San Clemente real estate news: Construction on the long-awaited Plaza San Clemente—a 580,000 square-foot outlet shopping center that will overlook the Pacific Ocean in San Clemente—is set to begin this spring and the first phase could be open by the middle of 2015.

Developer Steve Craig told the Orange County Register things are set for construction to begin on the first 350,000 square-feet in March, which will cover 52 acres of the 248-acre development. Plaza San Clemente will be located on a palisade that overlooks the ocean, near the Avenida Vista Hermosa exit off the southbound I-5. It will feature a Spanish-motif. There are also plans for more than 300 residential homes to be developed on the property.

Plaza San Clemente will consist of nearly 140 shops and outlet centers and up to 14 restaurants that will boast views of the ocean. Construction on the project was supposed to begin in 2008, but when the economy went in to a tailspin things were put on hold. Now things are back in place and groundbreaking on Plaza San Clemente is imminent

Craig said there were more than 100 public meetings to determine the projects details, and the citizenry won’t be disappointed. He added the mall’s architecture will rival that of anything found in Southern California.

“This will be some of the finest retail space that you’ll see probably in Southern California,” Craig told the Register. “I think we could put it up against what you see in Beverly Hills. We could even put it up against some of the really authentic stuff that you see in Santa Barbara.”

Plaza San Clemente will provide around 1,500 construction jobs and about 1,000 permanent jobs at the shops and restaurants in its first phase, Craig said.
